Bougie on a Budget: Full Face

A huge shoutout to Toni Sevdalis for the inspo here.  If you haven’t checked out her YouTube yet, give her a view – she’s awesome, as is her sister Allie.

Toni does ‘Bougie on a Budget’ hauls for her wardrobe, mainly mixing some high end staples with looks from Walmart, Express, and other similar high quality fashion retailers. I thought that this is something we could replicate here with makeup.  Why not?  My daily look is a mix of high and low, so why not share some of my faves.

infallible

Having a great complexion is the base of any flawless look {skincare is key too – see my post here}.  You don’t have to pay a ton to have a flawless face.  L’Oreal makes a great product in their Infallible Pro-Matte 24 Hour Foundation that’s a demi-matte finish, and honestly, looks just as great as my favourite, and expensive, Armani Luminous Silk foundation.  Wet ‘n Wild Photo Focus Foundation is a great alternative if you want a more matte, full coverage product.  I’d compare this more so to a NARS product.    See my POST about the L’Oreal Infallible concealers.   Don’t even try something high end.  Use a lighter shade under your eyes, and perhaps mix with a slightly darker shade for your perfect tone if needed.  A simple spot of this to match your foundation will cover any and all blemishes!

cotySetting foundation and concealer is key – so I’d recommend the Coty Airspun powder.

Bronzer is a must – countour, or just to up the glow factor.  NYC makes a great product that can be built to match the tone you’re looking for.

For eyes, there’s tons of great options at the drugstore, but particularly, I’ve always loved the Covergirl Shimmering Sands trio.  I’ve had it since high school {not the same one, relax!} and find it universally flattering.

Y’all know what mascara I love and it needs no intro: grab yourself the Maybelline Total Temptation in the waterproof formula specifically.  It’s buildable, bold, and easy to remove.  What’s not to love?

In terms of blush, Milani has it locked down.  Grab Luminoso.  It’s a universally flattering light blush colour, similar to NARS’ Orgasm.

Highlight is key too!  Don’t forget it.  It just polishes the whole look and gives you a glow that we Canadians need in these long, cold winter seasons!  I recommend and use the NYX highlight in Lavender Steel {NYX is one of the best brands on the market, hands down}.  It’s got purple undertones, but looks great on varied tones of skin.

Brows.  Don’t forget those either.  NYX, again, makes a great brow product – reallllll similar to the Anastasia Brow Wiz – and the price is right.  Not to mention the wear is fantastic as is the shade range!

For lips, again – you guessed it – go to NYX:  Los Angeles lipliner is universally flattering {think MAC Whirl} and any of their Butter Glosses well rival high end products like Chanel.  I personally use their Butter Gloss in Tiramisu almost every day!

What are your drug store go-tos?

Winter Makeup Change Up

I’ve blogged in the past about how I manage to use my out of control large makeup collection and really cull through the goods to find out what items are just as good as they claim to be, or items that I just can’t live without.  If you’re curious to see what I’ve used in the past, check out my most recent change up post here.

Following a vacation to Mexico, rather busy November & December, as well as a packed social and work schedule, I wasn’t able to do this as early as I’d hoped.  Apologies.  Better late than never, right?  RIGHT?

What Stayed:

I guess you could stay these are my staples, and things I just really love {if it’s not, I’ve indicated below!}

  • Beautycounter Tint Skin Foundation {I mix this with whatever moisturizer I’m using}

{Incase you’re wondering just what didn’t make the cut this time, here’s a shot!}

What’s New?

I can’t tell you how incredibly excited I am to try these new goodies!  All year long, I keep a list of Sephora loves, and I anxiously await the 20% off sale to pick up just what I’ve been dying to try.  Some of these beauties are new acquisitions and I’m giving them a true first try.   It would seem I’m into single shadows this month…a welcome diversion from my palette-heavy rotation!

* You’ve noticed the list below is missing a few bits.  Why, you ask?  It’s simple.  I picked out too many products to try this time around; they’ll have to wait.  I kept the picture just as a little reminder*

  • Dior 5 Couleurs Palette in Rosy Tan {I’m ashamed to say, this isn’t made anymore.  I’ve had this for a while – for my personal collection only – but I still love it!}
  • Marc Jacobs Air Blush  #508
  • Nars The Multiple in Portofino {not sure how I’m going to like cream blush in winter…}
  • Becca x Jaclyn Hnew-face-editedill Champagne Splits
  • Gucci bronzer **
  • Hard Candy eyeshadow in Nude Beach
  • Lorac Blush in Flaunt {linked below – and it’s on sale!}
  • Buxom Full on Lip Polish in Sugar
  • Urban Decay Liners in Sabbath and Smoke
  • Urban Decay Chase shadow  {just got word this has been discontinued.  Seriously UD?  Seriously?}
  • Clinique Black Honey single shadow {this has been discontinued too.  URGH!}

**Before we conclude this blog, can we just have a moment for the untouched Gucci embossing?? Pleaseandthanks**

Dupe Alert: Lip Liners

I think I’ve said it a few times:  Marc Jacobs’ Longwear Lip Liner in Prim(rose) is the bomb dot com.  It wears so well, goes with all shades of lipstick and is that perfect YLBB shade.  It’s pricey, that’s the only reason I want to dupe it.  Much like my beloved Charlotte Tilbury Bitch Perfect  I wanted to find the same shade a similar shade at a lesser price that does {just about} the same thing.

Where is the first stop when one wants to dupe a fave?  A beauty junkie’s personal stash, of course.  I dug through my current liners and took out what I thought were the closest matches.  Here they are, from top left to bottom right: Marc Jacobs Prim(rose), NYX Pretty in Pink, NYX Rose, NYX Sand Beige, NYX Nude, NYX Nectar, NYX Nude Pink, MAC Spice, MAC Whirl, MAC Oak.

IMG_4168

You can see there’s some clear contenders and some immediate misses. I’ve certainly confirmed that a product may look the same by the colour of the packaging, yet swatch very differently.   I was easily able to narrow it down to 3 close shades:  NYX Nude, MAC Whirl, and MAC Spice.  Here’s a close up with MJ Prim(rose) on the top left, NYX Nude below that, MAC Whirl in the top right, and MAC’s Spice below.

IMG_4169

Hmmm….again, clear difference in shades once swatched.  Whirl is, by far, the closest!

I didn’t want to just test the colour payoff, but also longevity and application – two key features I love so much about the MJ liner.  So, I let the swatches set up for about 10 minutes and did a simple swipe across my hand.

IMG_4170

Interesting test result {not an overly scientific or innovative test, I’ll admit}.  Now you can see that the MAC shades wiped almost right off.  This isn’t surprising.  Whenever I wear a MAC shade, it ends up sliding off my lips.  Cute, I know.  You’ll also see that the NYX Nude shade stayed put and does look somewhat closer in tone to the MJ liner once it sets.   It does pull a bit more brown in tone, but the difference isn’t significant.

Of course, I opted to test all 4 in a row with day to day wear – hands down, NYX Nude was the winner.  Though slightly different in tone than the MJ, it wears like a dream.  It doesn’t move off my lips and doesn’t dry them out, similar to the MJ liner.  I do have to be honest in saying that MAC ‘s liner formula isn’t my favourite.  I find the product that does stay on my lips dries them out.

All in all, the NYX Nude liner is my winner for closest dupe in this battle.  I love how it wears, and you just can’t beat the price.

Tell me, do you have any dupes I should know about?
