First Impression: L’Oreal Lash Paradise Mascara

I’m not the first to post about this.  In fact, I would assume I’m kind of late to the “game”, so to speak.  When I saw all the buzz about this mascara, namely the comparison to the Too Faced Better Than Sex {TFBS} mascara, I knew I had to try it. Y’all know about my beloved Maybelline mascara and my propensity to favour a drugstore buy over a high end alternative, so it was a natural fit for me to give this one a try.

This mascara purports to have a soft wavy bristle brush that holds a max formula for a dramatic volumizing charge.

Benefits include:

  • 200+ bristles catch every lash for a full fringe effect
  • Smooth glide formula provides silky volume in one extra black coat
  • Lashes are feathery soft to the touch  {I don’t agree – they’re kind of tough but I like this because it holds a curl better}
  • Women agreed: 91% saw intense and volumized lashes and 87% saw more beautiful lashes
  • +98% lengthening effect
  • Voluptuous volume and length
  • Soft wavy bristle brush
  • More black pigments

It comes {currently} in 4 colours, at least in Canada:

  • Washable Black
  • Washable Black Brown
  • Washable Blackest Black
  • Waterproof Blackest Black

I’m gonna cut to the chase:  this is the SHIT.

Yes, it does all it claims to do and more.

Can we also have a moment for the luxe packaging please?  Undeniably reminiscent of the TFBS tube, it feels and looks super high end.

TFBS

This packaging.  WOAH!

For my super straight lashes, it holds a curl all day without clumping or flaking or even transferring.   The formula {I bought the Blackest Black in the washable/regular formula, not waterproof} is drier, so a word of caution that you have to work fast.  You might not want to let this dry between coats to prevent the clumpy spider look, but that doesn’t take away from the sheer volume and length this puppy provides in one fell swoop.   I tend to let it dry simply out of habit and a simple brow comb does the trick to separate lashes and avoid spider legs.

The brush looks markedly like the TFBS as does the packaging, but does just the same job at half the price.  Lash Paradise currently retails for about $13.99 in Canada, though I’m quite sure if you watch for a sale or check out WalMart, you can save a few $$.

This is a MUST buy.  Don’t walk, run to your nearest drugstore and pick this up ASAP.

Review: Maybelline The Colossal Big Shot Mascara

Hi lovelies!

First of all, apologies for my prolonged absence.  If I’m being totally honest, I was in most of a funk for February {is a February Funk a thing?}.  In addition to my personal and work lives being overly packed, I just wasn’t in the mood for {gasp} all things beauty.  Never fear, though, I’m back with a renewed and spring-like approach to life, ready to blog!

Despite my “funk”, I did pick up some new goodies and tried my best to test a few things to review.  Here for you today is my opinion on the Maybelline The Colossal Big Shot mascara.

I’m a huge fan of Maybelline mascara, well, mascara in general so when I saw this newbie on the shelf, I had to pick it up…when it was on sale, of course, ‘cause I’m cheap.

What Does it Do?

According to the website, this mascara purports to fully volumize in one coat with a brush features unique, wavy bristles that cradle lashes, while the collagen formula delivers bold volume.   The mascara is washable, and comes in three shades: Very Black, Blackest Black and Brownish Black {points for creativity, Maybelline}.

Like all mascara I buy, I bought this in the darkest shade I could, given that I’m a natural brunette with relatively dark features.IMG_5352

In terms of my initial impressions, this mascara took a day or two for me until the formula dried down a bit.  The first time I wore it out of the house on just a normal day, I saw it transferred and didn’t hold a curl.  It just sat on my vanity like a sad little tube.  I decided to give it a go the other day, and I have to say that the results were far closer to what the Maybelline site claims.

I found that this mascara certainly volumized and didn’t really transfer, which I love since I’m a fan of fluttery bottom-lashes.   Was it huge volume and big length to give a false lash effect? No.  But in fairness, that’s not what this mascara claims to do.  It’s just a preference for me.

The Verdict:

This wasn’t bad at all, and I’ll likely finish up the tube.  I quite like the formula and finish, though it’s not #1 in my book.  It doesn’t hold a curl as well as I’d like it to, and I could use a little more length.  Would I repurchase it?  Likely not, since I still like the Lash Sensational formula better and the price point is similar.

Winter Makeup Change Up

I’ve blogged in the past about how I manage to use my out of control large makeup collection and really cull through the goods to find out what items are just as good as they claim to be, or items that I just can’t live without.  If you’re curious to see what I’ve used in the past, check out my most recent change up post here.

Following a vacation to Mexico, rather busy November & December, as well as a packed social and work schedule, I wasn’t able to do this as early as I’d hoped.  Apologies.  Better late than never, right?  RIGHT?

What Stayed:

I guess you could stay these are my staples, and things I just really love {if it’s not, I’ve indicated below!}

  • Beautycounter Tint Skin Foundation {I mix this with whatever moisturizer I’m using}
  • Life Brand concealer/blemish stick
  • Maybelline Lash Sensational mascara
  • L’Oreal Voluminous primer
  • MAC Prep + Prime Highlighter in Radiant Rose
  • Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer {I use fair}
  • Benefit Eye Bright
  • Tarte Concealer {I was very surprised to see this is still made – it’s just ok.  I’ll finish it up and won’t likely repurchase}edits-kept
  • Chanel Les Beiges powder
  • Laura Mercier Caviar Stick in Khaki
  • Anastasia Dipbrow Pomade {Dark Brown slightly sheered out matches me perfectly}
  • Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir mascara {a sample only, still on the fence about this one!}
  • NYX Lip Lingerie
  • Bite Lippies – various shades, but my fave is Meringue
  • Fresh Lip Treatment {trying to use this up.  It’s not bad, but Carmex is better…}
  • Kat Von D Ink Liner in Hemingway
  • Anastasia Brow Wiz

{Incase you’re wondering just what didn’t make the cut this time, here’s a shot!}

What’s New?

I can’t tell you how incredibly excited I am to try these new goodies!  All year long, I keep a list of Sephora loves, and I anxiously await the 20% off sale to pick up just what I’ve been dying to try.  Some of these beauties are new acquisitions and I’m giving them a true first try.   It would seem I’m into single shadows this month…a welcome diversion from my palette-heavy rotation!

* You’ve noticed the list below is missing a few bits.  Why, you ask?  It’s simple.  I picked out too many products to try this time around; they’ll have to wait.  I kept the picture just as a little reminder*

  • Dior 5 Couleurs Palette in Rosy Tan {I’m ashamed to say, this isn’t made anymore.  I’ve had this for a while – for my personal collection only – but I still love it!}
  • Marc Jacobs Air Blush  #508
  • Nars The Multiple in Portofino {not sure how I’m going to like cream blush in winter…}
  • Becca x Jaclyn Hnew-face-editedill Champagne Splits
  • Gucci bronzer **
  • Hard Candy eyeshadow in Nude Beach
  • Lorac Blush in Flaunt {linked below – and it’s on sale!}
  • Buxom Full on Lip Polish in Sugar
  • Urban Decay Liners in Sabbath and Smoke
  • Urban Decay Chase shadow  {just got word this has been discontinued.  Seriously UD?  Seriously?}
  • Clinique Black Honey single shadow {this has been discontinued too.  URGH!}

**Before we conclude this blog, can we just have a moment for the untouched Gucci embossing?? Pleaseandthanks**

Fall Makeup Change-Up

If you’ve been reading for a while, you know I like to post about changing out my makeup seasonally or just when I feel like I’m in the mood for a change.  This time, I suddenly got excited for the upcoming Fall season {not sure why – it’s cold, my birthday is coming and I’ll be a year older, and a frigid, Canadian winter is imminent}, and decided it’s time for a change.

I started by eliminating any products I deemed to be “summery”.  This included bright lippies, eyeshadows, or blush.

I decided to retire {and by retire, I just mean put back into my massive collection}:

img_0120

  • a Too Faced Melted lipstick in Peony and a NYX Intense Butter Gloss;
  • a long-time fave eyeliner from Tarte;
  • my NYX Brow Pencil;
  • Tom Ford lippie;
  • Laura Mercier’s Rose Gold Metallic Eye Creme Color;
  • L’Oreal Infallible Eye Shadow in Amber Rush;
  • my new absolute fave blush – Colour Pop’s Never Been Kissed;
  • Too Faced Love Flush mini-blush;
  • Charlotte Tilbury Bar of Gold highlighter {was a LE item, unfortunately}.

This is really the only way I can work my way through what I’ve got and be sure everything gets the love it deserves!

As always, a few things got to stick around.  I guess you could call these some of my Ride or Die {I can’t make that phrase happen.  Still hate it…} products, or some I’m just trying to use up or am testing for future bloggity posts:

  • Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Bronzer;
  • Chanel Correcteur Perfection Long Lasting Concealer;
  • Chanel Les Beiges All In One Healthy Glow Fluid {discontinued, but they kept No 20, my shade!};
  • MAC Prep n Prime in Radiant Rose;
  • Rimmel Wake Me Up Concealer in Ivory;
  • Life Brand Clear Action Acne Treatment Concealer Stick in Light;
  • Carmex;
  • L’Oreal Voluminous Primer;
  • L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara with a curved brush in Blackest Black;
  • Chanel Le Volume de Chanel Mascara {I’m thinking I’m gonna do a review on this one…comment below if you want one!};img_0119
  • Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara {not sure of the shade, likely very black – can’t read it};
  • Anastasia Dipbrow Pomade in Dark Brown;
  • Lipstick in Charlotte Tilbury Bitch Perfect and Bite’s Meringue;
  • Lipliners from MAC in Soar and MUFE in 3c;
  • NARS Satin Lip Pencil {not sure of the shade};
  • Various samples, and a dirty-azz set of Q-tips and a slightly dirty mini BeautyBlender.

What’s new for the fall?  A few things, but it looks like I kept most things around, huh?  The staples above seem to be pretty common in all of my change-out posts, so it doesn’t leave much room for new products.  I did, of course, make due with the circumstances and managed to find room for a few newbs in the daily rotation:

  • Kevin Aucoin eyeshadow in #108 Faded Heather {I love this shade all year round.  It’s so unique, but especially wonderful for fall};
  • Chanel Ombre Essentielle in #90 Fauve;
  • Chanel Joues Contraste Powder Blush in #89 Canaille {this translates to “Cinnamon” and is a welcome departure from my normal pink shades.  I love it, though, and have re-discovered this in my collection for sure!}img_0122
  • Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush in Radiant Magenta {y’all know I couldn’t stay away entirely from pink!};
  • BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal;
  • Benefit Eye Bright {yes this is old packaging, but I sharpened and sterilized it}.  This was totally inspired by Tiffany D and an old fave re-discovered;
  • Laura Mercier Caviar Stick in Khaki {another gorgeous shade for hazel eyes and for fall}  How I love this formula!;
  • Anastasia Brow Wiz in Medium Brown;
  • Charlotte Tillbury eyeliner in Verushka Mink;
  • Chanel Precision eyeliner in Violet Smoke;
  • NYX Lip Lingerie in Ruffle Trim;
  • NARS Velvet Matte lippies in Roman Holiday and Never Say Never.

Whew!  There you have it.  Another seasonal change out done and I’m ready to rock and find some old new loves in my current collection.

Lovin’ Lately: August Faves {and a Fail}

I know you’ve likely heard this a million times already, but here it is to make it a million and one:  how is it September already?  Summer just flew by!  For me, it was the best summer in so many ways, due in no small part to the insanely warm, sunny {and oft too humid} weather here in Toronto.  I’m a little sad to see it go if I’m being honest, but can’t wait for warmer fall clothing, scents, and, of course, makeup looks.

I’ve got a few faves from August and a bonus {is it really a bonus?  Really?} fail for y’all.

Beauty Faves

Truth be told, I’ve never been a fan of dual ended brushes.  Yes, I understand that they essentially serve 2 functions, save space, and are often better priced, however I don’t like turning the brush around to use the proper side, and hate the fact that one end of the brush has to be crushed while stored in a brush cup or belt.  My Crown AC012 Shadow/Crease Duet brush is the one exception,  yet I don’t use it for it’s intended purpose.  Instead, I use this brush for my daily nose contour – the pencil brush end applies a pigmented line of my bronzer {or your contour product of choice!} where I put it, and the fluffy blending end blurs that line perfectly.

I think I’vefig posted about my next fave in some iteration before.  FRESH Sugar Lip Tints are the bomb and I LOVE them.  I love the formulation, I love the colour range, I love the lasting power, and I love the brand as a whole.  If you follow me on Instagram {if you don’t, go over and doooooo it} you’ll know that a friend brought this over as a gift a month or two ago.  Yes, us beauty junkies don’t like normal hostess presents.  I have kept this at my desk for mid-day application all month long.  Every time I apply it, the colour just perks up my whole look and lasts until I re-apply or a solid two hours, at the very least.  I love this.  It’s a staple in my purse in a different shade, and now a staple on the daily in Fig.

A little late to the bandwagon on the ColourPop line, I put in an order for a few bits earlieSuperShockCheek-NeverBeenKissed_e15420f8-242d-4801-bf44-77ebd0f6ad0c_1024x1024r this year and have only just now gotten around to trying them out.  I guess that’s what happens when you have a massive collection to make your way through!  While almost every single Colour Pop product has beena hit with me, nothing has struck me more than this blush – Super Shock Cheek Blush in Never Been Kissed.  It’s described as a dusty coral in a Matte finish, and I’d say that’s pretty bang on.  Application is a 10/10 – it’s smooth and buttery.  Packaging is a 10 too – it’s uber cute and closes tightly to keep the product fresh.  Payoff – well that’s a 10 too.  It gives a glow to the skin that complements the light tan I’ve got going on.  I can apply as little or as much as I want; the product is really easy to layer and, as you’d expect, even easier to work with.  You can’t beat the price either, at $8 USD.

Lifestyle Faves

Does it mean you’re the epitome of lazy when you can’t be bothered to apply lotion after a shower?  I guess so, yeah.  If it’s wrong, though, then I don’t wanna be right!  Jergens Moisturizer for Wet Skin has changed my body lotion game.  When I first came across this product, I was truly skeptical.  I couldn’t understand how a moisturizer could do its proper job when I’m rinsing myself and, arguably, still soaked with water.  Alas, my skepticism was soon turned around and this has become a staple in my shower.  I still elect to apply a thicker Body Butter once or twice a week.  However, for the quick showers on a busy morning, I have been applying this lotion and it’s kept my arms and legs silky smooth.  My personal fave is the coconut scent, but either one of the two seems to work just as well; I’m merely going on scent.

I know what you’re thinking: “no one needs a frivolous Louis Vuitton agenda.  The price is ridiculous”.  You know what?  You’re right.  No one NEEDS it, but I wanted it and I’m glad I bought my LV Desk Agenda.  I use a Target agenda {yes, the irony of the price juxtaposition isn’t lost on me…} inside on one side, and a Moleskine notebook on the other to keep track of blog posts, personal and business administration notes, miscellaneous to-do lists and other notes.  The planner itself is great, and perhaps deserves a shout out all on its own, however it’s this Desk Agenda that allows me to keep all of my important paperwork and physical calendar all in one place, housed in a chic cover.  There’s secretarial pockets on the one side and credit card pockets on the other – another organizational feature I love.  I’ve had the GM agenda in the past, but found it too heavy and cumbersome for every day use.  The Desk Agenda allows me to keep the essentials with me and doesn’t weigh me down.

And now…the moment you’ve all been waiting for, the August fail:

Chanel Le Volume MascaraS191210_XLARGE

I’m a bit of a mascara fanatic.  Y’all know that.  I’ve tried this particular mascara before and was recently browsing through Saks when I crossed the Chanel counter and thought I’d give it a go again.  Bad move.   For this price, it should come with a personal assistant to apply it, and should last all damned day.  Straight up, that doesn’t happen; the product is crap.  It volumizes, I’ll admit.  However, in terms of wear – it ends up on my face a few hours after application, and if it doesn’t smudge, it flakes.  I can’t even fathom wearing it on my bottom lashes simply because I fear raccoon eyes so very deeply.    I’ve read reviews and it seems I’m the only non-fan that I can find.  Sorry, Chanel.  Usually you’re tops on my list, but this little guy makes certain I stick to my beloved drugstore mascara that does it all.    Don’t waste your hard earned cash.

That’s it for this month.  What have you been lovin’ lately?

Ride or Die Makeup Tag

Full disclosure: I kind of really hate the phrase ‘ride or die’.  I’m making an exception for use of the term just this once, however, since it’s the title of the tag and this is all in pursuit of beauty.  Make no mistake, you won’t likely see it used here in the future, just sayin’.

This was a lot harder than I thought it’d be.  I have just so many fave products in my rotation and in my collection that I don’t use often, but instead save for client use only.  So, I’ve considered products from both categories and had to dig deep through my makeup stash over the past day or two to determine just what the few products I can’t live without would be.

Let’s get into it – what are my ‘ride or die’ faves? Here’s your answers:

PRIMER

Too Faced Primed and Poreless.  I’ve been using this for years on all different skin types.  It allows for a flawless application and makes your look last all day. I tend to use it on all of my clients with the exception of those with acne prone skin.  Even then, it helps mattify the t-zone fabulously.

FOUNDATION

YSL Tient Touche Eclat.  Hands down.  This works well on my skin because Im not oily; it provides a dewy, glowy finish and doesn’t cake on.  As a bonus – it photographs like a dream! I will often mix it in for clients whose big days are being photographed or who have a long day ahead of them – it just adds a much needed ‘pop’ to a look.

CONCEALER

Can I have a tie?  Yes I can.  It’s my blog.  High end fave is Chanel Correcteur Perfection Long Lasting Concealer.  It’s a liquid concealer that applies like a cream concealer. It covers even the darkest of spots and blends into the skin very easily.  The Chanel concealer is most definitely a splurge item for me, and – I’ll admit – is hard to justify when the drugstore has a veritable competitor: Maybelline Instant Age Rewind.  A little goes a long way and it doesn’t fall into creases or fade as the day goes on.  Most importantly, the price is right!

FACE POWDER

MAC Mineralize Skinfinish.  This one was the easiest to narrow down!  It applies a fine layer of powder and locks my concealer and foundation {when I wear it} in place.  The price is sort of middle-of-the-road, but one compact lasts a long while.  It can be used to bake under the eyes or just as a basic setting powder.

UNDER EYE SETTING POWDER

I don’t really use a separate one daily {see above} and instead opt to go with whatever face powder I’m currently using.  Does that make me a bad junkie?

For clients – I like Bare Minerals’ Well-Rested on those with oilier skin.  On those with a drier or normal skin type, I’ll stick to the Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder.

BLUSH

NARS Orgasm.  It’s so universally flattering and matches my skin-tone no matter what the season.  I can adjust the impact of the colour so easily and blend it out for a quick pop of colour; it doesn’t get much better than this.  If I only could keep one blush, this would be it!

BRONZER

Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Bronzer.  This. Smells. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Good.  But that’s not the reason I love it so much.  It creates such a natural, soft glow with just a hint of shimmer.  I can use it all over and apply it with a more dense brush to contour the face naturally even after I’ve lightly bronzed up a complexion.

HIGHLIGHT

BECCA’s Champagne Pop.  No surprise here!  {check out other posts here and here oh, and here too} There’s no other highlighter on the market like this one.  True to its name, it pops on the face and just a little goes a long way.  Champagne Pop gives the best colour payoff when catching the light at just the right angle.

MASCARA

Ooooh another tough one.  This one is no secret:  Maybelline Lash Sensational.  If we’re talking high end, it’s a tie between Benefit They’re Real and Armani Eyes to Kill.

LIPSTICK

Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche lipstick in Meringue.  I have 2 of these {which is a lot for someone with a lippie collection of this magnitude!} – one for my purse and one for every day application.  {EDIT:  I’m down to one.  I lost the other one…}

I can so easily change the tone of this pink with a lipliner, but on its own it’s the most perfect pink-nude on the market.  In my humble opinion, of course.

LIQUID LIP

Not a huge fan of liquid lipsticks so um…I don’t have a fave…but if you do, leave it below!

GLOSS

Any of the NYX Butter Glosses are great.  In particular, I’m a fan of Tiramisu. It’s a perfect purse shade: it can go on top of anything and you don’t really need a mirror to apply it.  The undertones of pink in the shade really make my lips look great and, true to their names as well, they’re buttery soft.  These glosses last longer than any other gloss I’ve tried.

LASHES

I don’t often wear lashes for myself, but for my clients, Ardel 120s are my go-to for a natural look that pops in photos without looking over the top false.

EYESHADOW PALETTE

Urban Decay Naked – the original.  This palette has so many great shadows that I’ve used time and time again on brides and print models alike.  It’s just so dang versatile!  I can use the darker colours as liners, the lighter ones to bronze or brighten an eye, and they all apply like a dream regardless of their shade.  What’s more is that all I need for a long trip is this one palette and I can create a different look every night without trouble.

SETTING SPRAY

Urban Decay All Nighter.  I’m not a true believer of different sprays for different skin types.  I’ve used this on myself and clients – all with different complexions – with no concerns.  It keeps my makeup going all day, even when I’ve worked 10+ hours and walked in the dense Toronto humidity.  Plus, a spritz of this just freshens up a whole look and rejuvenates the makeup you’ve applied hours before.

PERFUME

Theirry Mugler – Angel for every day, absolutely.  It fades quickly to a subtle vanilla scent, at least with my body chemistry.  I catch whiffs of it throughout the day and get compliments on it almost every time I wear it.

Did you do the Ride or Die Makeup Tag?  If you did, leave it below.  Thanks to Jaclyn Hill for this super fun and rather difficult to answer set of Q’s!
