How Young is TOO Young for Makeup?

I feel like it’s a rite of passage. Looking back through old photos of yourself and wondering “WTF was I thinking with that hair and makeup and outfit choice?”. Girls these days seem to be skipping that entirely and going right to straight up vixens a la Kylie Jenner.

The first time I really remember wearing makeup – beyond clear mascara {thanks for the mom-wins compromise Mama Bain!} – is about grade 9, so I was 14 years old. I didn’t use anything expensive. In fact, I don’t think I bought my first MAC product {clear gloss. Again, thanks, Ma!} until quite a bit later on in high school.why-are-middle-school-girls-skipping-the-awkward-stage-and-going-straight-to-pretty-no-you-get-braces-and-wear-blue-eyeshadow-do-your-time-ae494

I believe I had a job at the time, and MAC was a luxury 14 year old me certainly couldn’t afford on my allowance. Yes, my parents gave me a small allowance – I had to work for the money y’all!

The reason I say that is this: I see all sorts of young girls {and by young I mean under 16 or 17} starting a beauty YouTube channel. What do they know about beauty? It sounds rude but it’s true. What did you know about beauty at 14? Me? I knew that dark brown lipstick made my teeth whiter, so I wore it. I didn’t know how to over-line my lips to look like I’d had injections. I also knew that copper shade of Bonne Bell {I’m aging myself, aren’t I?} eyeliner made my hazel eyes look nice. Blush? Bronzer? I didn’t have a clue. Where do these “gurus” get the money to buy all the makeup – and yes, we see makeup collections from them, exhaustive collections with mid-range priced products – why the bank of Mom and Dad, of course.

I’m all for a little makeup at that age and learning what works for you and what enhances your natural beauty. These girls are focusing on making things look fake and it drives me mad.

I think 14 is too young to start wearing tons of makeup, but a little mascara and lipgloss isn’t over the top. What do you think? Sound off below!

  1. I love that you posted this and I fully agree about the teenage youtubers. It must be nice to buy all that makeup with their parents money! I started wearing makeup when I was 12 to be honest, but all I did was put on shimmery beige eyeshadow. I didn’t get really into it until I was about 15 and always did my eyeliner and mascara. It is so weird seeing young girls over lining their lips to look like Kylie Jenner!!! It’s too much. xo J
