Review: Jaclyn Hill for BECCA – Champagne Pop

When I initially saw yet another YT guru “creating” a unique product and co-branding with another makeup company, I rolled my eyes. I thought to myself, these people are only famous to a select niche group of viewers and have, essentially, made their name by talking to themselves into a camera, any they most certainly don’t know anything about the creation of a good product. Alas, I ignored my own better judgment when it came to the Jaclyn Hill/BECCA collab highlighter Shimmering Skin Perfector in Champagne Pop and boy am I glad I did.

Before I get in to the particulars of the product, can we have a moment of silence for the packaging, please? It’s this most gorgeous gold colour, albeit not particularly unique, but eye catching and indicative of the product housed inside the little gold box.

I’m a big fan of highlighters, whether summer or winter, rain or shine. I have long warn BECCA’s Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal, and decided to give Champagne Pop a try when I saw it was markedly different in terms of shade with the former giving {as the name would suggest} and opal coloured, soft luminescence to the skin, and the latter providing a “pop” of a coppery-gold tone when applied to the skin.

Champagne Pop is a Limited Edition product {though it still looks to be well in stock on Sephora’s website} and retails for $46 CAD in stores  {link: Sephora}.  It is described as providing refined luminosity in any light. The bestselling formula is enriched with ultra-fine luminescent pearls that absorb, reflect, and refract light so natural radiance is never lost. Unlike the traditional pressed powder method which simply mixes and compresses dry ingredients, BECCA’s unique process blends pigments with proprietary liquid binders, resulting in unparalleled, creamy application with balanced color dispersion. Like a compact full of crushed gemstones, the multi-toned, ultra-fine pigment pearls adjust to your skin’s natural undertones for a truly unique glow. {Editor’s Note: I don’t think this description is for Champagne Pop alone, but rather for all of the BECCA highlighters} As always, Temptalia does a better job of describing it as a highlighter that isn’t for the faint of heart! It is very bright and reflective, while soft and easy to blend.

I found this product to be very easy to work with, and provided almost too much of a highlight on my skin. It’s best to use a light hand with this highlighter, and go easy on the product. You can go from softly lit to disco ball in 3 seconds flat! I like to “pop” it on the top of my cheekbones, down my nose and in the cupids bow of my lips. It gives a subtle, healthy glow to my skin and easily lasts through an 8 hour work day. I have also found that it works well in the inner corner of my eye, under the lash line, or under the brow for a quick sweep of shimmer. All in all, I love the application and you can certainly rationalize the high price point {I can rationalize any and all makeup purchases, it would seem} by using just a little of the product daily; a little goes a long way.

In terms of dupes, I wasn’t able to find anything in my collection that matched Champagne Pop in terms of exact pigmentation and application. I did, however, compare it with two MAC cult faves: Superb and Soft and Gentle.

While it looks similar to Soft and Gentle in the package, Champagne pop pulls much more gold on my skin, and I’m inclined to think it would for most skin tones. I’m also going to go out on a limb and say that you could mix the two MAC colours together and get a similar result to Champagne Pop’s colour payoff. I’m not sure of how it would wear, but will say that I have never been disappointed by MAC highlighters and they’re priced much more affordably {not when you buy two, I guess, but you catch my drift}. IMG_3424

THE VERDICT: This was a worthwhile purchase for me, and I’ll wear it ‘til it’s out. It lasts all day, allows for me to apply as much or as little as I want while still projecting little “pops” of colour when the angles of my face hits the light. If your budget allows, this is one limited edition product I wouldn’t miss out on. It’s also left me wanting to try more of what BECCA has to offer. Wouldya look at that! The cross marketing worked. Go figure! {#unapologeticshopaholic}
